good morning, derrick. >> reporter: don't let the quiet behind me fool you. there's electricity in the air here. take a look. got video of the past game day here at fedex field, and of course this game is one of the stored rivalries in the nfl. the skins coming in off a six-game winning streak and the cowboys coming off of a four-game winning streak. if the skins lose they could still go into the playoffs, and that is if the bears lose. and you might want to bring a blanket, because it's going to be nippy, and of course you will be warm with a lot of your friends. a lot of dallas friends in this town as well, and a lot of redskins to cheer them on. what better way to end the season than with the possibilities of going forward. we are live here at fedex field. back to you. if you are headed to the game you will need a lot of luck staying warm as derrick

meet the press moderator david gregory sat down with an exclusive interview with president obama, and you can see that at 10:30. new today, police are trying to identify a man. the "washington post" reports the victim was behind the wheel when he was shot and then he crashed into a tree. no word on developments for a search for a gunman or if there has been an arrest made. and tonight there will be a vigil for a football player found stabbed to death. there was an arrest. police found stringfellow dead in a fan on friday night in vienna. the two strangers had plans to meet. his former teammate is understandably saddened at the news of his death. >> it was really hard for me,

we begin with breaking news in maryland. 270 traveling southbound at west diamond, you can see the accident off to the middle of your screen. the left lane, the southbound lane being blocked and the shoulder being taken away by emergency response vehicles. if you are headed this way stay to the right to get by and please use caution considering there are investigators out on the roadways. before we ring in 2013, this morning we want to look back at 2012. >> 2012 was a year of highs and lows in the washington region. here is a look at the top five

stories that made headlines. number five, battleground virginia. a swing state in the race for the white house and which party would control the u.s. senate. hundreds of thousands of voters turned out in northern virginia on election day, and some waited in long lines for four hours to cast their votes, and presidential candidates rallied supporters throughout the campaign and spending millions on ads. in the end, the voters helped to re-elect barack obama and elected tim kaine to the senate. and then marriage equality was approved, and gay coupled in maryland can begin saying "i do" in january. number three, scandal in the district. two sitting counsel members resigned and were charged with

felonies. harry thomas resigned in january admitting to stealing $400,000 that was designated for city youth programs. plus, the on going investigation into d.c. mayor vincent gray's 2010 campaign. harris pleaded guilty to a $650,000 shadow campaign to help elect gray. two other campaign workers pleaded guilty to a separate scheme to pay minor candidate brown for his sharp criticism of mayor fenty. and then the d.c. baseball team made playoffs. the washington nationals earned the best record in baseball on the way to clinching the nl east, and then they lost.

at manassas, and it's gusting 29 miles per hour at camp springs. so when your little pocket of air touching your skin, your skin warms that pocket of air, and your body has to work that much harder to warm up the wind that touches it. and hagerstown, lucky you, it feels like 18 degrees. if you are going to the redskins game, dress warm and in layers. the actual highs will be in the 30s and it will never quite feel that warm today. but there is no snow on the local map and you have to go up into eastern maine to run into that. we are dealing with sunshine and increasing winds as the storm winds up, and it reaches here with the wind speeds, and it will start to relax during the game, but still breezy. tomorrow morning, 26. new year's eve will be clouding up. i think we stay dry. the next weather maker should

skirt by to our south. let's put things in writing. sun returning, breezy and cold, 35 to 40 degrees. as we look at the forecast for the next several days, we are going to be looking at temperatures staying pretty cold. tomorrow is new year's eve and not that bad in the 40s. normal highs are around 44. we will just be cloudy. i think we stay dry, no problem. new year's day, a system skirts by to the south and maybe a rain shower up our way, and if anybody sees that it will be the nearby southern suburbs, and then we cool down again. we will have highs in the middle 30s with lows in the 20s, so pretty cold weather as we think about the new year, and you will want to bundle up and play it safe out there. no rain or snow for everybody out there looking at the new year. the nhl labor fight continues this morning with continued hope the league and the players' association could

reach a deal. yesterday talks continued by a conference call but were limited to discussing the league's offer from this past thursday. it was originally believed the two sides would meet today for face to for negotiations, but so far nothing has been scheduled. they want to reach an agreement for the following week. now to the must-see game of the week. >> what could that be? >> i don't know. >> in just a few hours fans will start flocking to fedex field to watch the cowboys take on the redskins. good sunday morning, everyone. i am jason pew. after winning their last six straight games the redskins sit at 9-6 and are in control of their own destiny tonight against the cowboys. the redskins clinch their first

training facility. the team reached a deal earlier this year to hold training camp in richmond over the next eight years as part of an economic incentive deal with the commonwealth. the tpfacility is expected to ct around $10 million and should be done in time for next year's training camp. and crews are gearing up to help hundreds of thousands bring in the new year. looks like things are quiet, and all of that will change when things get rocking tomorrow night. you can see carson daley ring in 2013 from times square. and the 2013 sign is ready to go. organizers are testing out the confetti -- how do you test out confetti? >> you just throw it, right?

the time is 9:29. we are on top of breaking news. the southbound lanes on i-270 are blocked in the gaithersburg area of montgomery county. several cars are involved in the crash. at least two lanes are getting by. you can see most of the wreckage has already been cleared from the left-bound lanes, and officers are skill on the scene, and traffic is only flowing on the right lanes. there was an ambulance on the scene and we have no word if there were injuries. and a live look there at the flag flapping in front of union

and spending will be slashed if leaders from both sides don't compromise. leaders from both sides are to be in session today. and police found a body last night around 8:30 in the southeast d.c. the "washington post" reports the victim was behind the wheel when she whe was shot and then crashed into a police. police have not made an arrest in this case just yet. and a blast killed 19 people and injured 30 others in pakistan. the attack happened near three buses in pakistan. the shia pilgrims were there. and so far nobody has taken responsible for the attack. and investigators are trying to

determine whether some victims took too much of the cough syrup to get high or if there was a problem with the medicine itself. 62 people are in the hospital after drinking cough syrup. and u.s. troops are headed to central africa to help evacuate u.s. personnel. personnel at the u.s. embassy were pulled out of the country this week as concerns grow that rebels are moving in on the capital city and could spark violence and up rising. the president describes it as a deteriorating security situation. today is the final day for the nation's gun show happening here in our area. thousands turned out yesterday for the event at the dulles expo center. the weather didn't stop the crowd of potential buyers that could buy things now that could soon be banned. >> reporter: the nation's gun show every time the doors open

means somebody got off their butt and decided to change the constitution a little bit, and that will lead to a lot of other issues. >> unlike the show's opening on friday, yesterday saw no protesters possibly because of all the weather. another expo is scheduled for february. and this weekend firefighters are going door to door in one community checking to make sure residents have working smoke detectors. a fire broke out friday night on laurel hill in greeneville. neighbors say they heard a commotion and could hear people yelling for help. >> i came home and heard screaming and i thought people were arguing and i went out to my backyard and i saw flames shooting out of the back window. >> and then the fire got worse. it started coming out of the roof, and it was billowing out of the windows and the firemen knocked out some of the windows. >> two people were hurt when

this morning a d.c. woman is waking up with her family for the first time in 16 years. she reunited with her son and the rest of her family in california. she suffered from kidney failure and a stroke and she was shot in the head. she couldn't remember how she got across the country. she was getting treatment when one day she suddenly remembered

her california address. the nurse tracked down her family in richmond. they had not seen each other since 1996. >> it's been kind of hard. you wonder and you don't have all the support you need as a young man growing up, but the rest of my family have been real good, they have been there for me. >> i didn't know he was that big. golly, he's big! >> hawkins was in a d.c. woman's shelter before she entered the hospital and she will celebrate the new year with her family. in this week's wednesday's child, some children are looking ahead to 2013 with added hope and their wishes for the new year include a loving, permanent home. here is news4's barbara harrison with more on our wednesday's children. >> hello. welcome. >> thank you. >> she thinks one day she would like to own a bridal salon. since we like to give our wednesday's children a special day doing something fun, hitched

look at the wind gusts. 33 miles per hour. northbound winds are steady at 16. that's sending windchills down into the basement. and 41, that looks so nice in fredericksburg, and even you are not in the clear with these very busy winds. and martinsburg to d.c., all in the 30-mile-per-hour range, and then you look at hagerstown and go, wow, look at the 45-mile-per-hour wind gusts. that makes it feel like the teens up there. feels like 21 for you in winchester, and in the south, 36 in fredericksburg and 29 in the district. so the high, 39, it will feel like 29, so dress warmly. the sunshine is back, especially to the south. a lot more sun, and mostly sunny skies point south of the beltway. where did the snow go? it's going, going, gone into the

maritime. around here, it's the sunshine and the winds as the storm tightens up, the pressure gradient, which is the air being sucked into the storms creates winds all around it as far south as our area. and 10:00 this morning, snow continues to fly to the west up there in ski country. that will be winding down, too. here is your monday, your new year's eve. pretty uneventful. we will have clouds increasing but it will be staying dry here. i will pause this for you new year's eve. no problem, i don't think we will have any precipitation. and off to the west and south, you may have a system trying to skirt by to bring a stray shower, but i don't think it will bump far enough to bring us anything meaningful, but it will yank down cold air as it passes by, and so in writing, highs today between 25 and 40, but let's face it, it's not going to
